What Is Quote Turnaround Time?
Quote turnaround time (QTT) — also called Time to Quote (TTQ) — is the elapsed time between a buyer's quote request and the seller's delivery of a completed, actionable quote. The metric gives sales and pricing operations teams a quantifiable way to locate friction within the quote-to-cash cycle.
A concrete example: an industrial distributor receives an RFQ at 9 a.m. Monday and delivers the completed quote at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Its QTT for that transaction is 50 hours. That single number represents every handoff, approval delay, and pricing lookup that occurred in between.
How Quote Turnaround Time Works
QTT is measured across a sequence of distinct events. Understanding where each event begins and ends is essential for accurate tracking.
- Clock start — RFQ received in system. The measurement begins when the request enters the quoting system, not when a sales rep opens it. After-hours submissions and incomplete RFQs are a common source of measurement inconsistency; teams often log the wrong timestamp by mistake.
- Triage. The request is reviewed and routed to the appropriate rep, pricing analyst, or product configuration team based on deal type, customer segment, or product complexity.
- Pricing and configuration. The rep performs price lookup, applies applicable discounts, and configures the product or service to match the buyer's specifications.
- Internal approval. Quotes that fall outside standard price bands route to a pricing manager or deal desk for exception review and sign-off.
- Clock stop — actionable quote delivered. The clock stops only when a complete, buyer-ready quote reaches the customer. A draft, a placeholder acknowledgment, or a partial line-item response does not stop the clock.
The clock-start definition is the single most operationally contentious point in QTT measurement. Teams that define it inconsistently produce metrics that cannot be compared or trended meaningfully.
Quote Turnaround Time vs. Quote Velocity
These two terms are frequently conflated because both relate to quoting speed, but they measure different things at different levels of analysis.

QTT carries the greatest operational consequence in three B2B scenarios.
Configure-to-order and engineer-to-order manufacturing. Complex bill-of-materials (BOM) structures, custom specifications, and engineering reviews make QTT inherently longer in these environments. The gap between a slow supplier's QTT and a faster competitor's is where deal losses tend to concentrate.
Multi-channel distribution. Buyers purchasing through direct, dealer, and digital channels expect consistent response times regardless of channel. Significant variation in QTT across channels signals process inconsistency and erodes confidence in the supplier's operational reliability.
Contract and rebate environments. When customer-specific pricing agreements, tiered rebates, or volume commitments govern the final price, quoting accuracy depends on retrieving live contract data at the moment of quote generation. Manual lookup of these agreements is the primary bottleneck in many distribution and manufacturing quoting workflows.
Limitations and Strategic Risks
Tracking QTT without managing its known failure modes can produce misleading data or perverse incentives.
- Speed-accuracy trade-off. Pressure to reduce QTT can lead to quotes with pricing errors that damage margin and credibility. Manage by tracking quote accuracy and error rates on the same reporting dashboard as QTT.
- Metric gaming. Reps may send incomplete or placeholder quotes to stop the clock early. Manage by defining "actionable quote" precisely in the team's measurement protocol and auditing delivery quality periodically.
- Incomplete RFQ problem. When a buyer submits an RFQ missing critical specifications, the clock starts before enough information exists to produce an accurate quote. Manage by logging an RFQ-complete timestamp separately and calculating QTT from that point for complex deal types.
- One-size-fits-all targets. A four-hour SLA appropriate for catalog items is operationally unrealistic for engineered-to-order products. Manage by segmenting QTT targets by deal type, product line, or customer tier.
