What Is a Quantity Discount?
A quantity discount is a reduction in per-unit price granted when a buyer purchases at or above a specified volume threshold. The core principle is straightforward: the more units ordered in a single transaction or period, the lower the price per unit. Also referred to as a bulk discount or volume discount, this pricing structure is distinct from a trade discount, which is triggered by a buyer's role in the distribution channel rather than by order size.
Example: An industrial distributor purchasing fasteners pays $10.00 per unit for 1–99 units, $8.50 per unit for 100–499 units, and $7.25 per unit for 500 or more units. The price reduction is tied entirely to order quantity, not to who the buyer is.
How a Quantity Discount Works
Setting up a quantity discount involves three steps:
- The seller defines quantity breaks — specific volume thresholds — and assigns a price or discount rate to each tier.
- The buyer places an order, and the order quantity is evaluated against those thresholds.

A cumulative quantity discount applies to total purchases over a defined period, such as a contract quarter, rewarding consistent volume over time. Cumulative structures overlap mechanically with rebate programs and introduce accounting complexity, because the seller carries discount liability before final volume is confirmed.

At that scale, consistent tier enforcement becomes operationally difficult. Field sales teams may override tiers or grant informal discounts to close deals, quietly eroding margin floors.
Quantity discounts also sit within a broader price waterfall — the sequence of deductions between list price and the net price actually realized. They layer alongside contract pricing, rebates, and promotional terms, and the cumulative effect on margin can be substantial. Pricing teams that manage these structures in isolation, without visibility into how tiers interact with other discount layers, frequently find that realized margin falls well below what the tier schedule implies.
Limitations and Strategic Risks
Quantity discounts introduce risks that sellers should model carefully before setting tier structures.
- Margin erosion: Tiers established without floor-price modeling can produce negative-margin deals at high volumes. A discount schedule designed to reward large buyers can inadvertently make those transactions the least profitable.
- Buyer over-purchasing: Deep tier breaks incentivize buyers to order more than they need, increasing holding costs, obsolescence risk, and eventual return pressure.
- Robinson-Patman Act exposure: In U.S. B2B markets, offering different quantity discount schedules to competing buyers of the same goods — without a cost justification — can raise legal risk under the Robinson-Patman Act, a federal statute prohibiting price discrimination that injures competition.
