How Spot Pricing Works

When buy-side spot costs shift, distributors must recalibrate sell-side prices to protect margin. The challenge intensifies across omnichannel environments: if spot-driven cost differences vary by region or channel, price lists that do not update in step create inconsistency — and margin leakage. Maintaining alignment between live input costs and customer-facing prices is one of the core operational demands that spot market exposure introduces.
Limitations and Risks
Spot pricing offers immediacy and transparency, but it carries material risks that practitioners must manage:
- Price volatility. Spot prices can move sharply within hours, complicating budgets and margin forecasts — particularly for manufacturers with long production cycles and fixed-price sales contracts.
- Supply and capacity risk. Cloud workloads running on spot instances can be interrupted with little notice; physical commodity availability may tighten suddenly during supply disruptions.
- Dealer or execution premium. For physical commodities such as precious metals, the price a buyer actually pays exceeds the quoted spot price due to fabrication costs, dealer margins, and form factor (coin versus bar, for example). Treating the spot quote as the all-in cost is a common and consequential mistake.
- Monitoring burden. Managing meaningful spot exposure requires real-time price feeds and internal processes capable of acting on them. Stale data — relying on yesterday's spot benchmark to price today's transaction — leads directly to margin erosion.
